Zone 51
|
On June 27, 2019, an event was held on the social network Facebook initiated by Matty Roberts entitled "Storm area 51-They can't stop all of us". This American event, organized on Facebook, was aimed at the invasion of area 51. In all, more than 2 million people answered the call and 1.5 million were interested. This event generated a real buzz and was widely relayed in the media.
In addition, this event also had an impact on related activities. Indeed, some Nevada companies prepared the arrival of participants with goodies. And two festivals were set up. In the end, this event proved to be purely comical and a hoax. Of course, not all the 2 million people expected on site showed up. This is due to the possible reprisals of the political authorities informed about the event. However, some people took it seriously and this had consequences. About 100 people went to the site and 7 arrests were made. |
This event served as the foundation for the total arts projects prepared by this group of students who chose to do it in the form of a short film. Their objective was to retrace the facts from the creation of the event to its unfolding. What was interesting was that they presented an alternative ending in order to answer the following question: if the communication and the stakeholders had been different, what would have been the end?
This reflection underscored the storyline of this short film.
To accomplish this, the students staged the play around two groups. On one side, we find the FBI accompanied by the representative of zone 51 and on the other the creator of the event and "a character who will evolve from a simple joker to a pro-invasion character".
The idea is to observe the evolution of the event seen from the perspective of each group, focusing on the preferred methods of communication and their behavioral changes.
The short film focused mainly on one-up and one-down styles of interaction in the Palo-Alto interpersonal communication axioms (Bateson, Watlawick). This allowed them to be dynamic while at the same time making it possible to retrace the evolution of each of the characters staged within this play.
For their project, the students mobilized three theories.
The first is Shannon's. By watching the entire short film and retracing the facts, viewers cannot know the truth. In fact, there is no feedback between the different stakeholders.
The second is Wiener's. The authorities have had echoes of what was going to happen. Their purpose is to maintain order, they took into account the potential threat. Matty Robert then decides to withdraw, judging the event too risky. This proves to us that feedback allows for the adaptability of events. Here, the "raid" turns into a festival.
Finally, the third theory is that of the 5 axioms. The group of students to mobilize and transcribe the 5 axioms in their project. They particularly focused on the
and one-up and one-down so that their work is dynamic and allows to show easily the evolution of the protagonists.
In order for the projection to be successful, the students utilised a room in the School’s premises. As the number of seats in the room was limited, the group decided to set up screening schedules. Some members of the group then had the task of distributing screening tickets allowing access to the room at the alloted times.
Through this film, the students conveyed the fact that although they decided to show an alternative ending, the spectators understood that this was not the only possible ending. There are a multitude of possibilities to be exploited in order to reach the same end or another!
