The Myth of the Martians

In 1827, in Milan, the myth of the Martians was born. Giovanni Schiaparelli, director of the observatory of Milan, is interested in the planet Mars. After observing various works, including maps made by astronomers, he realized that they did not correspond to his vision of the planet. He then decided to create his own cartography.  He used the term "canali" to represent the natural channels he observes. A few years later, the work was taken up and translated into English. But it was without counting on a translation error ... Indeed, Percival Lowell translated this term by "canal » which did not have the same meaning in English as in italian where it was endowed with supernatural connotations. The myth was then created and relayed by many artists and a culture was born.

Humanoid Robot

The exhibition of this project took place through a visit to the Original Society for the Production of Humanoids and Artificial Intelligence (SOPHIA). This acronym was not chosen at random, in fact, Sophia is the name of the first android to have obtained the citizenship of a country.

During our visit to SOPHIA we could witness all the stages of the production of these androids. The stages were the thread that allowed the visitor to understand in detail the production process of intelligent humanoid robots.

This visit was made up of 4 key stages: In the first stage, entitled "Golem", one could interact with an engineer from the SOPHIA group who was modelling a golem in clay to recall the link with Wiener's "God and Golem" (1964).

Insubmersible Titanic

The RMS Titanic was a British trans-Atlantic liner which, on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in 1912, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean following a collision with an iceberg. It was steered by Commander Edward Smith who sank with the ship. Some of the wealthiest personalities of the time made this voyage aboard the liner, as well as hundreds of emigrants.

This exhibition was designed as a journey, following the model of the exhibitions of the Bauhaus movement. Visitors physically move alongside a table to view the different stages this tragic event. Behind the table were panels information which presented different aspects of the shipwreck. To achieve an interactive role play with visitors, the students mounting this exhibit played different roles. A main guide or narrator told the story of the Titanic.
